Welcome to the Shoreline Community College's Pi Iota Chapter website. Phi Theta Kappa is an International Honor Society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the academic achievements of community college students. We hope that this website provides you with the knowledge of what Phi Theta Kappa is as well as the rewards of becoming a member. Reminder for the PTK Induction Ceremony on Friday, 16th May 2008

Inductees, please bring a flashlight for the ceremony if at all possible. Due to fire regulations, they will be used for the ceremony in place of lighted candles. We also intend to simultaneously conduct a flashlight donation drive in concert with the ceremony.

Tent City 3 Update

We will be going down to St. Mark's to help with the initial setup of Tent City 3.

Date: Saturday, April 26
Time: Meeting at the bus stop on campus at 9 am, going to St. Mark's at 9:30

I will have some directions for anyone who doesn't know how to get there. We will basically unload trucks and help to get everything ready for them.

Pizza Party this coming Tuesday!

We are having a member appreciation PIZZA PARTY:

Tuesday April 22nd in room 1515 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm

There will be no work and no meeting, just FUN! Hakson will be there taking pictures for the website. We will be playing a movie in the background. The movie will be "The Nutty professor" with Jerry Lewis.

Tent City 3

Phi Theta Kappa members,

Below you will find a forwarded message about ways we can be involved in Tent City this year at St. Mark's. I think it would be great if we could attend the community meeting on Thur. April 17th at 6pm in Bloedel Hall on the west end of the church to find out how we could be involved and to learn more about homelessness.

TC3 moves to St. Mark's on April 26th-that's 18 days away!

Here are 12 specific ways YOU can get involved!

1. Pass out Flyers: On Friday, April 11th, pass out flyers alongside TC3 residents to the local residences of St. Mark's announcing the TC3 Community Meeting

2. Community Meeting: Support TC3 and learn more about homelessness by attending the TC3 Community Meeting on Thursday, April 17th at 6:00PM in Bloedel Hall

3. Moving Day! Help TC3 move from Our Redeemer's Lutheran in Ballard to St. Mark's on Saturday, April 26th

4. Community Potluck: Bring together TC3, St. Mark's, and the community-Help organize a Community Potluck on the St. Mark's lawn

5. Camp Communicator: Be a Camp Communicator (Communication Liason)- work with Danielle and alternate weeks attending TC3's weekly Camp Meeting on Wednesdays to extend invitations to the residents of TC3.

6. TC3 Sunday Meals: Volunteer to prepare, serve, set up, and/or clean up- Contact Elly at ellafine@yahoo.com for TC3 meal volunteer opportunities.

7. Photography Project: Are you interested in helping out with a photography project with TC3 residents? This project is in proposal stage, but if it moves ahead, it will need hands!

8. Public Relations: Do you have a PR connection?

9. Donations: Elicit donations from community businesses. IDEAS: dental care, medical care, hair cuts, ground coffee, sugar, milk/cream, bus tickets, etc.

10. TC3 Tours: Co-Guide a TC3 Tour after the 8, 9, or 11AM Sunday Services- team up with a TC3 resident or 2 to take a group of people on a tour

11. TC3 Table: Sign-up to host (stand at) the TC3 Table in the coffee corner after the 8, 9, or 11AM Sunday services

12. Special Skills or Resources? Do you have any special skills you could offer? EX: vocational services (interviewing skills, resume writing) medical care, dental care. If so, contact Danielle at linkd@spu.edu

Phi Theta Kappa's Involvement with Community Service

Why would I wake up and start my day on a Saturday so very early? After all, aren't Saturday mornings reserved for sleeping in after a full week of classes? Well, that's it, to be grateful for my classes, to be grateful for my opportunities, both academically and otherwise. On this Saturday morning, February 23, on behalf of Phi Theta Kappa, five of us carpooled at 5:30 in the morning to the Union Gospel Mission in downtown Seattle. We spent the morning serving hot breakfasts to all who came through the doors -- men and women, young and old, the disabled, and those who would otherwise be healthy if it weren't for a lack of a place to call home. Exchanging "good morning" smiles, we got briefly acquainted with these homeless folks, leaving me humbled with gratitude for my opportunities.

And Thank You to Every one of You…

Our commitment to these folks extended to passing on the blankets with heartfelt thanks to every one of you, here at SCC, in our recent campus wide blanket drive. Jennifer Bennett, our PTK V.P. had the lone privilege among us five members in spending an evening on the Union Gospel Mission's Search and Rescue Van in passing on the numerous (nearly 100!) blankets from you. I understand from Jennifer that it was an easy task, as the homeless folks greatly and readily accepted the blankets (along with clean socks & hot cocoa) in exchange for someone nice, such as Jennifer, to talk to. But, in another sense, it may not have been that easy of a task as we recognize how so very much we really do have, and so how far down on their luck a person, any person can become.

SCC students named to All-USA Academic Team

The 2008 All Washington Academic Team includes SCC students Jerimiah Rice and Hakson Teh.

Age: 28

GPA: 3.82

Major: Physics/psychology

Jerimiah earned his GED in Churdan, Iowa before moving to Seattle where he worked as a sheet metal worker while going to school. He is known across campus for his stellar character, profound interest in knowledge and understanding, and leadership abilities. Jerimiah believes in helping others and volunteers at the college and in his community. He is one of the first students selected by faculty for the new Honors Program.

Age: 22

GPA: 4.0

Major: Computer Science

Hakson possesses both academic and artistic talent. His insatiable intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm have made him a favorite of faculty who appreciate his brilliant ideas which have enhanced classroom discussion. Hakson is a young man of fine character who has a strong work ethic and leads by example. Community and culture are important to Hakson and he is inspired to capture snapshots of the human soul in his photography.

2006 All Academic Team

Shoreline Community College (SCC) honor students Kelly Apling and Tahoma Khalsa have been named to the 2006 All-Washington Academic Team. The team is sponsored each year by Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges to recognize community college students who excel academically and possess leadership qualities.

Apling, in her 40s, did not have a college degree, and while on campus helping her daughter enroll, picked up several pamphlets that piqued her interest. She decided to return to school to earn an Associate of Arts and Applied Science degree in the Speech Language Pathology Assistant program. Apling was a director of a before-and-after-school program at a private school for nine years, and this degree would provide opportunities for her to further her career working with children. “I felt ready for a change in my career and being able to do it within two years seemed ideal,” says Apling. She is the vice president of leadership and the vice president of service for Phi Theta Kappa – Pi Iota Chapter for the college. The mother of three, she takes great pride that she has been able to continue taking care of her family while completing her education. She is considering going on to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Khalsa, 21, made education his priority; improving his GPA quarterly, earning a 3.2 his first quarter and earning a 4.0 Spring Quarter of 2005, with perfect attendance. He is completing an Associate of Arts and Applied Science degree in the Dietetic Technology program and enjoys performing nutritional assessments for residents who live where he is completing an internship. He is very active in several clubs at SCC and has volunteered at the Shoreline Recreational Center as an activity coordinator since he was in high school. Tahoma selflessly tutored a classmate who was injured and could not attend classes (she had planned to withdraw from the program) and they both earned a 4.0 in every class that quarter.

All-Washington Academic Team members will be honored at a special ceremony at South Puget Sound Community College March 2, 2006, where they will be recognized by the governor and will have the opportunity to meet with key legislators and higher education leaders. Team members will receive a $750 scholarship funded by KeyBank and the Northwest Education Loan Association.
