3.         Cheating and Plagiarism:

Due to the difference in the ethics and morals of various individuals in the student populace, it has, at the direction of   the Board of Trustees of this College, become necessary for the professors and instructors at Shoreline Community College  to make their position clear at the beginning of the quarter on the subject of cheating and plagiarism (see College Policies  No. 5330, 5335, and 6260).  My position with regard to these two types of academics dishonesties is as follows:

  1. Cheating:  Cheating on tests or other student work will not be tolerated.  Any student caught cheating will automatically receive a failing grade for the work.  For purposes of this syllabus, I incorporate reference by reference the definition of academic dishonesty (cheating) of College Policies Nos. 5333 and 5335, as well as the unauthorized use of sources, aids or informants to respond to evaluative instruments (test, CRA’s etc) in this course.

  1. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is copying or using other individual’s ideas or works (including your textbook)  either: 1.  verbatim without using quotation marks and giving credit; or 2. Using the idea of another individual without giving credit. (unless the information is general knowledge) even if a few words have been changed or rearranged.  Plagiarism is in effect the theft of another person’s intellectual property.  An exam or paper contain any plagiarized material will received a zero (0) and there will be NO provision for make-up work (See College Policy No. 5333)

4.      Students have the choice of grading system (numerical grade or P/NC), but must exercise this option by the mid-point of  the quarter as published by the College. Review your College Catalog for details. After Grade Option Form and process has been completed turn in a copy the instructor.  Once this option has been exercised the student is locked into that grade.   No Grade Option forms will be signed after the mid-point of the quarter.  It is the student’s responsibility

        to complete the appropriate forms.

5.      Attendance is a required part of the final grade.  The attendance grade will be given as follows for 1, 2  or 3 credit  classes meeting 50 minute per session.

10       points -    given for pull participation for each class date

Student must be suit up of class in proper attire and full participated in all class activities.

5 points -      deducted for each day a student arrives late or leaves early. Students are considered late when they arrive more the 5 minutes after the scheduled start of class as published in the college time schedule. Or leave prior to quarter past the hour.

5 points         deducted for each day a student does not suit up for class and or does not fully participate in class activities.

0 points         given to student who arrive with less than 40 minutes of active time left in class.

For classes meeting 75 minutes per session, the point value will 15 points for full participation and 7 points deducted for late arrivals or not participation.

Note: attendance is not part of the final grade for PE 292 and PE 200 but attendance plays a large part in student success

6.       Test make-ups   - - Students missing a test will have 3 days to make up the test during the instructor’s office hours. If the          test is not made up within the 3 day period, the student will receive a 0.0 on that test and will not have the retake

option. Students missing test give during final exam week will receive a 0.0 on that exam.  Those arriving late for a test will         not be given more time to complete the test.  The test must be completed during the time scheduled.

7.         Z-No Credit Grade.  Z grades will not be given after the sixth (6th) week of the quarter (or the equivalent for Jump StartCredit Express and Summer classes) unless the student has a valid hardship and is passing the course at the pint of withdrawal.  The student must have documentation that they completed all in class work in date.  Any assignments due to date of the request must be turned I and the student must have at least 60% of the total attendance pints due at the point of withdrawal.  Refer to the college Catalog for more information about grades given at Shoreline Community College.  Students will not be given a Z or W grade to avoid the affects of cheating or plagiarism.

8.         Insurance – The College does not insure students against bodily injury.  If such coverage is desired it is our responsibility to provide it.  Insurance can be purchased at Registration.

9.        Cell phones and pagers are disruptive in class, please turn them off before coming to class.

Adverse Weather Policy:

If the College is closed due to inclement weather, students should listen to KIRO, KING or KOMO radio and television stations for broadcast of closure.  If no mention is made of SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEEGE (not to be confused with Shoreline School District) being closed, it will be assumed that the College is open and all staff and faculty will be present.  Every attempt will be made to keep campus roads and walkways open and students can expect that classes will start at their scheduled start times.  Students should follow the course schedule and be prepared for the next scheduled class.
