With a new coach, Dolpins expect competitive season

Well, it is that time again. The leaves are changing, the weather is getting cold and the SCC girls' basketball team is gearing up for another season. This year's team will be led by new head coach Petra Jackson, who is looking forward to a very competitive season.

With an extensive coaching background, Coach Jackson is excited about the potential she sees in many of these young women.

As for our new coach's qualifications, Petra played for four years on a division 1 high school team. After she graduated from Southern Illinois University she went on to play professionally in the WBA. This was one of the first women's basketball leagues, around before the Seattle Reign.

Recently Coach Jackson has been out of the basketball loop for two years but before that she has coached high school ball for 11 years. "It's not for the money believe me," she says with a grin, "I love coaching and working with the kids."

Although Petra was hired a little late in the season, she used what time she had to recruit some great new prospects for the Shoreline team. A few to keep your eyes out for will be: Kami Lyons, from Cleveland High School, Chantelle Realford, from Franklin, Allison Burke and Audrey Huber, both from Kings High School. One of the returners, Melissa Schumels, will have a lot of weight on her shoulders leading a very young team, according to Coach Jackson.

In passing I have caught these women working hard in their practices, running drills as well as having some fun.

"They are working hard and they are committed, these young girls have not been put through the rut of playing college ball, but we are excited and I think that we will turn some heads this season," says Coach Jackson.

"If they make it through me, they'll make it at a four year school."

Currently the team is carrying 11, but with open tryouts still continuing Coach Jackson says she would consider carrying up to 13, but no more for traveling purposes. The team will open the season here at Shoreline with the SCC tournament November 22nd-24th.
