Brian Kerin A&E Editor The College was notified over the weekend that its own Spindrift magazine won second place regionally for best literary magazine by the Community College Humanities Association. The news did not come as a surprise; according to the Spindrift website, the magazine has won several awards over the years, including, "best literary magazine" three years running at the Bumbershoot festival. First published in 1962, the Spindrift has been a fixture at Shoreline Community College. The magazine has focused on visual and written art including photos, paintings, poems and short stories. The content of the magazine is mostly works of art by Shoreline students, although, staff, faculty, and submissions from local community members are accepted. This year's publication also included a compact disk with the magazine that showcased spoken word and poetry pieces, as well as music compositions by students in the SCC music program. Although the faculty and staff work with the students to produce Spindrift, faculty advisor Gary Parks gives most of the credit to the students who work on the magazine, "The students really produce Spindrift; the advisor plays a minor role." The magazine is a hands-on education project for the Visual Communication Technology program. The students design, edit and produce the magazine every year to be sold the following year. Funding for the magazine comes from the College's Student Services and Activities Fund. Recognition for this year's paper goes to the student editors: Leslie Traylor- Windle, Melissa Farfan, Melanie Childers, and Allison Edwards. As well, credit is due to Gary Parks, Paul Cerda and the Music Technology folks for the CD attachment, Sigrid Conner and Christine Shafner for art advising, and Andy Conrad, the printing consultant. Most importantly praise should be given to the artistic contributors that make the Spindrift the beautifully creative magazine that it is. What's more, the award winning 2002 edition can be purchased in the SCC bookstore for $8. As well, submissions for this year's Spindrift are already being accepted. Information about how to submit works as well as what is accepted can be obtained at the Spindrift website.
