Letter From the Editor
Express yourself: Students should utilize freedom |
|
| . |
Also, I would like to extend a welcome to students winter quarter and take this time to express the Ebbtide's commitment to our campus and community here at Shoreline. Many clubs exist here on campus without much notice, and these clubs host several events for students. Part of our commitment is to help promote campus wide awareness of services and clubs made available to students. Before I joined the Ebbtide I often felt like just another face in the crowd. Through my experiences with the paper last spring, my eyes were opened to an entire world of campus culture that exists here. This culture consists of clubs, events, keynote speakers and many other great experiences that the College has to offer students. What I am getting at is that in a time where nationalism is at an all-time high, and American flags fly freely in front lawns and car windows, students should more readily express their freedom. Displaying your freedom with a flag, or voicing support for the efforts overseas is one thing, legitimately expressing your appreciation for freedom falls into a whole other category for me. All of us are attending an institute of higher education where we are consciously making the choice to better ourselves. This alone is something that should not be taken for granted. Expressing your freedom is easier than one would think and there are many ways to do so on campus. Join a club, write a letter to the Ebbtide, drop by the Student Government office and let your voice be heard. By living in a free country you have the opportunity to become more than just another face in he crowd, seize it. As a member of the free press, we are in a unique position to provide you, the students, with an open forum. This open forum is a place for students to express their views, raise issues, and get their voices heard. Check out the back page and look at the submitted poetry, take a look at the clubs page and club calendar, turn the page to the A&E pages and look at the upcoming events to be held on campus. If you enjoy writing poetry, submit it to us. If you have original artwork submit that also. We accept all student submissions and it's a great way to get published. This is an opportunity that I cannot stress enough for the students of this school to take advantage of. This is your newspaper, utilize it. If there is something that you feel deserves coverage by us, let us know about it. Send us an e-mail, write a letter to the editor, write and article and submit it. If it affects you, chances are it affects someone else her on campus, and is worth reporting. Here at the Ebbtide office (room 1502 if you're curious) a bumper sticker from The First Amendment Center hangs in our window and it reads: "Talk is cheap. Free speech isn't." As an American this slogan means a lot to me, and as a journalist it carries an extra special meaning: A meaning of liberty and freedom, purples mountain's majesty and amber waves of grain, apple pie and baseball. To me the First Amendment embodies everything American. Each day as I pass that bumper sticker, I want to stop and salute it and all that it represents, much like school children recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" to the flag. People don't understand that words are a powerful, valuable commodity and the ability to write, speak and publish them freely is priceless.
I urge the student body to enjoy their lives and appreciate all of the many freedoms that are afforded to them by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Go out to a movie, watch a few football games, celebrate life, celebrate your freedom. Drop by the office here and take advantage of the chance to have your voice heard. The Ebbtide is for the students of SCC by the students of SCC, let your voice be heard. Don't take your freedom for granted.
