ENERGY - THE 1ST CHALLENGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY

We will review the theory of peak oil and gas, and the implications for global warming, economics, both local and world politics. We will also explore and evaluate potential alternative energy sources, solutions, and future policy issues. Jim Hansen is a member of the Asson. for the Study of Oil & Gas-USA (ASPO-USA).

THE BASICS OF BIODIESEL

Heard about Biodiesel but aren't sure exactly what it is or how it can be used? Come learn about this clean-burning fuel made from plant oils that works in any diesel engine or home-furnace, and has the potential to transform our dependence on petroleum. This class will cover the qualities of BIODIESEL, variety of uses, health and environmental benefits, vehicle compatibility, fuel availability, and the basics of how to make your own fuel for about 70 cents a gallon. Join experienced biodiesel home brewer and educator, Lyle Rudensey, aka BioLyle, as he whips up a batch of biodiesel, and helps you along the path of energy independence.

BREW YOUR OWN BIODIESEL

In this hands-on class you will learn all the basics to make your own high-quality fuel. Students will make small batches of biodiesel with different oils and help to operate an "Appleseed" processor to produce several gallons of fuel. The class will provide a thorough introduction to all aspects of biodiesel such as processor design, automated processors, chemistry, quality control, vehicle compatibility, cold weather issues, status of the industry, disposal of wastes, legal issues and organizing a biodiesel co-op. Following the class, participants will be invited to visit an excellent homebrew set-up at a North Seattle home. Bring a brown bag lunch. Lyle Rudensey, aka BioLyle, works for a biodisel manufacturer and is an experienced home brewer.
