PRINCIPLES OF ISLAM IN A CONTEMPORARY WORLD--NEW
Discover the principles of Islam and raise
awareness of issues—common roots with other
Abrahamic traditions, cultural zones, how
Western Muslims fit in the Islamic world,
Islam’s teaching and legacy in relation to
democracy, pluralism and human rights. This
course will address some of the most challenging
issues—Islamic militancy, Jihad, development of
women’s rights in the western world and in
comparison to the teachings of Islam. The class
will investigate challenges, opportunities, and
roles that American Muslims as well as the
greater community can play to foster a better
understanding of each other.

CONSPIRACIES: FACT OR FICTION?
Why are conspiracies so popular? Where do they
come from and how legitimate are they? Since the
assassination of JFK, people have been labeled
as being "on the fringe" if they question any
other version than the official account. The
claims continue, however, and today, more than
ever, academics, politicians, journalists, and
the public at large continue to be engaged by
the ideas of conspiracy. This course will look
at examples from the last 50 years, consider the
role of the media, and analyze 3 case studies:
the 2004 election, 9/11, and the New World
Order.
