Career Planning Resources

There are many avenues to explore a career or to determine which career might be right for you.  Following are many options offered to students at Shoreline Community College

Career and Life Planning Class
Human Development 105, Career Exploration, is a 2-credit class that is offered every quarter. The class includes the use of several interest inventories to help clarify interests, a complete orientation to the resources in the Career Information Center, exploration of career goals, labor market projections and general career and life planning information. This class counts as elective credit on an Option A transfer degree. Please see the quarterly time schedule for information about tuition and times the class is offered.

Career Counseling and Educational Planning
Students can meet individually with counselors to discuss and explore their career goals. Counselors may be able to assist a student in identifying interests, researching occupations, overcoming obstacles and gaining confidence. Brief counseling assistance is also available to the community. Educational planning provides individuals with information about school programs and the training needed for a specific occupation. There are no fees charged for counseling appointments. Appointments can be made by dropping by the Advising and Counseling Center (Room 5229) or by calling for an appointment: 546-4559.

Interest Inventories
Career interest inventories are tests that may assist in matching an individual's interests with the interests of people in specific occupations. Although interest inventories aren't going to provide a "magic answer," they can be helpful in organizing interest areas in ways that may help in the career search process. Fees per test are: $10 students, $25 prospective students. If you would like more information, please make an appointment with a counselor to talk about this option by calling: 546-4559.

The Career Information Center
The Career Information Center is housed in the Advising and Counseling Center in the FOSS Building (Room 5229). The Career Information Center provides students and community members with occupational and educational resources. Catalogs, planning sheets, computer resources, books, reference guides and general information are available to assist individuals in their career planning. More detailed information about these resources is provided below.

WOIS
The Washington Occupational Information System is a computer data bank that includes approximately 300 occupations with information on salary, outlook, available schools and training in Washington state, working conditions, etc. This program provides a complete printout of each occupation selected. This is the best source for regional information on occupations. Contact the Advising and Counseling Receptionist in the Advising and Counseling Center (Room 5229) for assistance in getting started on WOIS.

Choices
Choices is computer system that provides information similar to the WOIS, but also provides the opportunity to explore interests and match them with occupational areas. Choices provides national information on salary, work conditions, related occupations, etc. Since it is national information it is not as accurate as the WOIS, except for the information about occupational demand in the future which is the most accurate information we have for Washington state. At this time there is no charge for using Choices. Contact the Advising and Counseling Receptionist in Room 5229 for assistance in getting started on Choices.

College Catalogs
College catalogs can be helpful in identifying potential majors at other colleges and universities. Catalogs are available in the Career Center. Students may check out catalogs with the receptionist in the Advising and Counseling Center (Room 5229).

Books and Reference Materials
The Career Information Center has many books and materials on general career information and specific occupations. Students can check out non-reference books and reference materials can be used in the Center. The Center also contains a video library.

Academic Planning Sheets
The Career Information Center houses the planning sheets for all Shoreline Community College degrees.   Planning sheets specify what classes are required for a particular educational degree program.
