Getting Started Teaching Online Using Blackboard

Get started in a web-based classroom in Blackboard, the software that SCC uses for its online, hybrid, and web-enhanced classes (web-enhanced refers to a face-to-face class with a supplemental online component).  We also will discuss course design and organization, as well as announcements and the online gradebook.  If you are interested in using Blackboard as a tool for teaching or are fairly new at using it, this workshop is for you.

An Orientation to Blackboard’s Assignment Manager and the Online Gradebook

In this workshop, you will use the Assignment Manager to create an assignment, so please bring a sample assignment sheet (in Microsoft Word, for instance) with you on disk (or accessible via email).  You then will learn how you and your students can exchange files using the Assignment Manager.  During the latter part of the session, we will tour the online gradebook and learn how to download our grades to a spreadsheet for printing and further grade manipulation.

Quarterly Blackboard User’s Group “Hang” Session

The New Blackboard Shell System Demystified

We will discuss the new system of Blackboard “shell” classrooms that are reused every quarter (instead of copied).  We will discuss when you might want more than one shell for a particular class and the pros and cons of doing this.  We also will go over how you can copy materials from one classroom to another, as well as "recycle" or remove old materials.  Please bring your questions.  Instructor:  Ann Garnsey-Harter, Director of Distance Learning.

We will discuss how students find out about online, hybrid, and web-enhanced classes; what support services they receive; and how they access your Blackboard classroom.  You will learn how to set up your Blackboard classroom for student entry and how to manage online users.
